ESA and EDF strengthen their partnership for energy efficiency at Europe’s Spaceport

Notable achievements of this approach include the ice storage system deployed at Europropulsion in 2024 whereby ice is made when electricity is readily available from solar sources to cool buildings when solar power is not available, as well as the introduction of a heat pump at the Regulus Premix 344 building. These initiatives would not have been possible without the 2019 partnership.

Several proof-of-concepts have been validated and are being considered by ESA for wider deployment.

As part of the new phase of collaboration signed on 10 February 2026, ESA aims to generate an additional €1.2 million in energy savings. Initial applications are already close to submission, with early indications suggesting that this target will be achieved.
