ATT and AST SpaceMobile have finalized a commercial agreement to create a space-based broadband network for cell phones, effective until 2030. Previously, the companies collaborated under a Memorandum of Understanding. This marks significant progress towards improved connectivity for consumers and businesses nationwide.

This summer, AST SpaceMobile plans to launch its first commercial satellites from Cape Canaveral into low Earth orbit. These initial satellites will provide commercial service, having already demonstrated key milestones in 2023, including the first voice call, text, and video call via space between regular smartphones.

The companies have partnered since 2018, with ATT playing a crucial role in this innovative solution. Chris Sambar, Head of Network for ATT, is set to join AST SpaceMobile's board of directors. ATT will continue to collaborate with AST SpaceMobile in developing, testing, and troubleshooting this technology to enable satellite coverage across the continental U.S.

"Space-based direct-to-mobile technology is designed to provide customers connectivity by complementing and integrating with our existing mobile network," said Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer, ATT. "This agreement is the next step in our industry leadership to use emerging satellite technologies to provide services to consumers and in locations where connectivity was not previously feasible."

"Working together with ATT has paved the way to unlock the potential of space-based cellular broadband directly to everyday smartphones. We are thrilled to solidify our collaboration through this landmark agreement," said Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile Founder, Chairman, and CEO. "We aim to bring seamless, reliable service to consumers and businesses across the continental U.S., transforming the way people connect and access information."

This step furthers ATT's goal of providing expansive connectivity on America's largest wireless network. Many areas currently without service will benefit from satellite solutions offering two-way connectivity.

In the near future, consumers will enjoy greater peace of mind with connectivity in remote locations such as wilderness areas, rural highways, and other hard-to-reach places around the country.
