L3Harris Technologies has recently completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) and Production Readiness Review (PRR) for 16 missile tracking satellites, pivotal components of the Space Development Agency's (SDA) Tranche 1 Tracking Layer (T1TRK) program.

These milestones mark a crucial progression in the development of the SDA's Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), a comprehensive network of military satellites in low-Earth orbit designed to bolster national defense capabilities. The completion of the CDR signifies that L3Harris' satellite design meets the stringent mission requirements set by the SDA. Simultaneously, the PRR indicates the agency's approval for L3Harris to commence full-scale production of these advanced space assets.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the growing threat posed by hypersonic missiles, which are characterized by their low visibility, variable launch points, and high maneuverability. These traits make them some of the most challenging kinetic weapons to counter. The United States, in its effort to deter and, if necessary, neutralize such threats, requires a resilient sensor platform capable of unveiling these missiles' flight paths.

At the heart of L3Harris' T1TRK system are state-of-the-art infrared sensors and algorithms. These components are engineered to detect, track, and fuse threat data, providing real-time information to warfighters through a meshed network utilizing both optical and radio frequency communications. The system's versatility is further enhanced by its ability to be commanded from the ground, enabling various pointing modes that offer additional insights into potential threats. The T1TRK program encompasses not only the satellites but also the supporting ground, operations, and sustainment elements throughout their operational lifespan.

Recognizing the importance of adhering to launch schedules, L3Harris proactively began fabricating critical sub-assemblies well ahead of the CDR. Now, with the successful completion of both the CDR and PRR, the team has transitioned into the assembly and integration phase. This phase involves close coordination with over 20 major subcontractors and numerous suppliers, all contributing vital components to the satellites and ground systems.

Bob De Cort, L3Harris' Director of Program Management, has been instrumental in steering the team through these milestones. His approach, encapsulated in the mantra "iterate, integrate, repeat," has been a guiding principle in the development of these 16 missile-tracking satellites. Scheduled for launch in 2025, these satellites are equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to counter even the fastest and most agile hypersonic missiles.

In his statement, De Cort emphasized the collaborative effort with the SDA, aiming to deliver these critical capabilities into the hands of the nation's warfighters promptly. He highlighted the SDA's innovative acquisition strategy, which diverges from traditional defense contracting by leveraging spiral development and interoperable commercial technologies. This approach facilitates the deployment of satellite tranches every couple of years, thus ensuring a continuous update and enhancement of space-based defense capabilities.

"Our recent success at CDR and PRR show that we are the leading partner within SDA's Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, demonstrating not just missile warning and tracking but the beyond line of sight targeting that the warfighters need to enhance America's strategic deterrence from space," De Cort stated.

De Cort also views the T1TRK project as a critical transitional step towards realizing the SDA's vision for the PWSA. The journey began with Tranche 0, wherein L3Harris developed prototype satellites for both the SDA and the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). These prototypes are slated for an upcoming joint launch, maximizing warfighter training opportunities.

The T1TRK project, for De Cort, represents a culmination of over three decades of experience in the space domain. With personal connections to the military, including family members actively serving, the project's success holds both professional significance and personal resonance for him. He succinctly captures the mission's urgency: "Increasing the lethality of our nation's missile defense is everything. Our adversaries aren't waiting, and neither can we."

The advancement of the T1TRK program by L3Harris marks a significant step in enhancing the United States' missile defense capabilities. The successful completion of the CDR and PRR milestones sets the stage for the next phase of development, bringing the nation closer to realizing a robust, layered space defense architecture.
