In a significant step towards sustainable aviation, key stakeholders in Germany's aerospace sector have come together to expedite the development and deployment of Power-to-Liquid (PtL) aviation fuels. One of the project's ambitions is to test pure PtL fuels-without any fossil kerosene additives-to facilitate the approval process.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized the importance of such collaborative initiatives, stating, "Research collaborations like this are essential for developing pioneering solutions for the climate-friendly transformation of air traffic. As Germany's largest airline, we are firmly committed to step by step making flying more sustainable. I am convinced that we will succeed with the combined know-how from aviation and science and that we will also strengthen Germany as a business location."

Likewise, Prof. Dr. Meike Jipp, Divisional Board Member for Energy and Transport at DLR, stated, "One goal is the future climate compatibility of aviation. To achieve this, Sustainable Aviation Fuels are indispensable in large quantities. This is why we are developing production processes that support an economical supply of aviation and are constantly optimizing SAF."

Airbus is also an integral partner in this research effort. Nicole Dreyer-Langlet, member of the Airbus management board in Germany responsible for research and technology, pointed out that SAF already constitute up to 50 percent of the fuel used in their aircraft. The focus now is on achieving approval for 100 percent SAF usage, which makes the topic of PtL particularly salient.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen Munchen GmbH, described the signing of this LoI as an "outstanding step towards a sustainable future for the entire aviation industry."

MTU Aero Engines AG, represented by CEO Lars Wagner, highlighted that SAF plays an essential role in both the further development of gas turbines and entirely new propulsion technologies. "In the short term, large production capacities must be created. That is what we are committed to and that is why we are participating in this important technology partnership," Wagner said.

The PtL process is particularly promising for the future of SAF, offering an environmental and scalable pathway. It involves the use of regeneratively generated electricity, water, and CO2 from the atmosphere to create a syngas, a precursor to sustainable aviation fuel. This offers a substantial potential not just for reducing CO2 emissions but also other non-CO2 emissions, the study of which is also part of the collaboration's agenda.
