One of the winning designs selected by the jury of ESA’s Space Suit Design Competition. The competition collected ideas from the public on what a future European extra-vehicular activity (EVA) suit could look like. This design was made by Alberto Piovesan.

Taking into account the extreme conditions spacewalk suits must withstand to protect our astronauts, participants were challenged to design a suit that is instantly recognisable for ESA astronauts. Over 90 ideas were received, and an ESA jury of exploration experts reviewed these proposals and ultimately selected five winners:

“Simplicity and equilibrium are the two central elements of my design,” writes Alberto in his proposal.

“I included both the white and the deep space blue ESA colours: the white to ensure a high visibility in space, and the deep space blue ESA colour to emphasise a strong ESA visual identity. The colour-blocking concept is expressed through an asymmetrical solution to convey dynamicity, something surely typical of space and all its elements.

The logos are arranged vertically and horizontally to ensure a good legibility under all conditions, position and movement of the astronaut: while working, standing still or moving horizontally from a point to another, etc. They are both small and large so that they can be read from different distances.

And, last but not least, some eye-catching colourful details that attract attention as a beautiful jewel would do.”
