Yahsat, the UAE-based satellite communications company, has completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) for its Thuraya 4-NGS Programme's Next Generation Service Platform and Broadband Products. This development marks a crucial milestone in the ongoing transformation of Thuraya 4-NGS, an initiative that has become integral to Yahsat's growth strategy and the advancement of its mobility satcom business across Africa, Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.

The Thuraya 4-NGS programme is a $550 million investment by Yahsat, and the Next Generation Broadband Products is an extensive and large-scale product portfolio that supports operational applications in land, maritime and aero environments. Yahsat and Cobham Satcom have collaborated in the development of the new products, which feature a wide spectrum of services including broadband data, push-to-talk and voice-over LTE. The Next Generation Service Platform is expected to support the new product portfolio with higher performance, reliability and security.

The Next Generation Broadband Products will offer advanced satellite communication capabilities to government, maritime, enterprise, energy, aero, NGOs and relief organizations. These new innovative solutions will deliver numerous advantages, including higher performance with data rates of up to 1 Mbps, enhanced capabilities and additional features. Yahsat aims to deliver these services to meet the needs of users across diverse operational scenarios.

Adnan Al Muhairi, Chief Technology Officer at Yahsat, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project. He said: "We are delighted to announce that the CDR review stage for these solutions has been successfully completed, and we remain on track to deliver the programme according to schedule. This is a testament to the exceptional talent, skill and innovative technology Yahsat brings to the table on a wide range of solutions that are aimed to meet the needs of users across diverse operational scenarios. The completion of this milestone, in partnership with Cobham Satcom, re-affirms our current product development program, which is in line with Yahsat's wider growth strategy and product expansion plans."

Christophe Duret, CEO at Cobham Satcom, also emphasised the significance of the CDR's completion. "The completion of the CDR not only marks an important milestone in the roll out of the Thuraya 4-NGS enabled portfolio, but also reinforces the strategic partnership we have built with Yahsat. As a leading MSS infrastructure and terminal provider, we are committed to the success of this ongoing transformational program as it will enable us to continue delivering the best products and solutions to our extensive distribution channels and client portfolio."

The Next Generation Broadband Products will be showcased for the first time at IDEX 2023, which will take place from February 20-24 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Yahsat's Thuraya 4-NGS programme is scheduled to commence operations in the first half of 2025, with a significant proportion of the solutions already available and operational over existing assets.

This partnership between Yahsat and Cobham Satcom has already produced the new product line that will revolutionise satellite communications across a range of industries. It is expected that the innovative solutions offered by the Thuraya 4-NGS programme will drive significant growth for Yahsat and provide much-needed satellite communications capabilities for businesses and organisations around the world. Yahsat has already established a reputation as a reliable provider of satellite communications solutions, and this latest development cements its position as a leader in the industry.
