NASA C-130 makes first-ever flight to Antarctica for GUSTO balloon mission
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 15:59On Oct. 28, 2023, NASA's C-130 Hercules and crew safely touched down at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, after an around-the-globe journey to deliver the agency's Galactic/Extragalactic ULDB Spectroscopic Terahertz Observatory (GUSTO). The United States research station, operated by the National Science Foundation, is host to NASA's Antarctic long-duration balloon campaign in which the GUSTO mission will take a scientific balloon flight beginning December 2023.

Tuesday, 31 October 2023 13:36How to watch the reveal of Euclid’s first images live
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 12:00ESA is releasing the first full-colour images of the cosmos captured by its recently launched space telescope Euclid. Follow live a broadcast of the reveal on Tuesday 7 November at 13:15 GMT / 14:15 CET.
Never before has a telescope been able to create such razor-sharp astronomical images across such a large patch of the sky. Five images show that the telescope is ready for its mission to create the most extensive 3D map of the Universe yet and uncover some of its hidden secrets.
Euclid: Gate to the dark
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 12:00ESA’s Euclid mission is on a quest to unveil the nature of two elusive ‘dark’ entities. As the renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking remarked in 2013, “The missing link in cosmology is the nature of dark matter and dark energy”.
During the last 70 years, scientists have made enormous progress in understanding the very initial phases of the Universe and its evolution to the present day. Thanks to advances in observations and theoretical modelling, a clear picture has emerged of how stars form, and how galaxies grow and interact with each other, coming together to form groups
China’s Space Pioneer raise funding for its Falcon 9-class rocket
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 10:45Groundbreaking method for robotic space assembly inspired by human arm dynamics
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10In the ever-evolving landscape of space technology, the role of robots in the assembly and maintenance of spacecraft is growing significantly. As reliance on robotic manipulators increases, the traditional methods of control are proving to be less efficient, particularly in complex assembly processes. In a recently published paper in Cyborg and Bionic Systems, researchers at Beijing Institute of
USound and Physical Synthesis to send the tiniest speaker to space
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10USound, the leading provider of advanced audio solutions from Austria, announced that it has been selected by Physical Synthesis, a US-based hardware startup that builds state-of-the-art musical instruments, for the completion of a challenging space project named "Blue Marble: Put a Musical Synthesizer in Space!". The project entails the design of a zero-gravity synthesizer that will be launched
Private sector actively competing for involvement in China's space station, manned lunar missions
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10China's private space enterprises are hopeful that commercial rockets developed by them will be involved in the launch missions of the low-cost cargo transport vehicle for the country's space station, announced a senior official with the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) at a press conference on Wednesday. In proposals provided by space enterprises for China's space station low-cost cargo t
Demonstration of data transmission from a microsatellite by laser
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10Small satellites are becoming increasingly compact and powerful. The technology of conventional radio channels is reaching its limits due to the rising number of satellites. Laser communications offers solutions for the efficient transmission of high data volumes without interfering with other channels. For this application, the German Aerospace Center Institute of Communications and Navigation,
To advance space colonization, WVU research explores 3D printing in microgravity
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10Research from West Virginia University students and faculty into how 3D printing works in a weightless environment aims to support long-term exploration and habitation on spaceships, the moon or Mars. Extended missions in outer space require the manufacture of crucial materials and equipment onsite, rather than transporting those items from Earth. Members of the Microgravity Research Team
SpaceX launches 23 Starlink Internet satellites after aborted mission
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10SpaceX launched 23 Starlink Internet satellites into low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Monday in its second attempt after aborting the mission Sunday. The successful second launch attempt was the eighth flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-5, GPS III Space Vehicle 06, Imm
Salts and organics observed on Ganymede's surface by June
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10Data collected by NASA's Juno mission indicates a briny past may be bubbling to the surface on Jupiter's largest moon. NASA's Juno mission has observed mineral salts and organic compounds on the surface of Jupiter's moon Ganymede. Data for this discovery was collected by the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) spectrometer aboard the spacecraft during a close flyby of the icy moon. The findin
NSF awards up to $21.4M for design of next-gen telescopes to capture earliest moments of universe
Tuesday, 31 October 2023 09:10The National Science Foundation has awarded $3.7 million to the University of Chicago for the first year of a grant that may provide up to $21.4 million for the final designs for a next-generation set of telescopes to map the light from the earliest moments of the universe-the Cosmic Microwave Background. Led by the University of Chicago and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the colla
