Description

We are expanding our team and are seeking a satellite ground station engineer based in Darmstadt, Germany working as part of our multi-national project team.

In the context of Satellite Earth Observation ground segment, monitoring, and control systems in an operational Mission Control Centre environment.  Provide support to the daily operations of the Ground Stations and their interfaces to other components of the ground segment to ensure their maximum availability and reliability. You will provide ground station engineering capability for both GEO and LEO missions.  Provide a system-wide knowledge of the Ground Segments, particularly in the areas of spacecraft monitoring & control and the flow of mission data, due to the central role the ground station plays in spacecraft and ground segment operations.

Support the ground station day-to-day operation and maintenance, analysis, design, development, and testing of the facilities which also includes the handling of anomalies, upgrades, and configuration changes for these facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Long-term planning and short-term scheduling of the operational usage of the ground stations to support both the needs of the Flight Operations and Ground Stations engineering team.
  • Interface with project teams for the implementation of system upgrades to support major operations projects and major activities described in the Operational System Mid-Term Evolution Plan. This will include ground station changes required to support major space segment evolutions.
  • Interfacing with the ground stations maintenance teams and industry representatives to ensure optimised performance by the ground stations, including participating in the definition, specification, and implementation of any changes.
  • Planning and co-ordination of upgrades, repairs, and evolutions with the engineering teams.
  • Organising the validation of upgrades, repairs, and evolutions with the Controller Teams.
  • Definition and maintenance of ground station operations procedures and operations guides.
  • Maintaining operational ground stations databases.
  • Investigation into anomalies, their documentation, classification and correction/mitigation, participation in associated Anomaly Review Boards.
  • Provision of training, through production and presentation of written materials, practical demonstrations, and presentations, to other members of the Operations Department.

Skills, Character and Experience

Essential

  • At least five years’ experience in a real-time 24/7 spacecraft operations environment, ideally in an earth observation environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and co-ordination skills
  • Good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances.
  • Working proactively within team and being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills.
  • System software engineering in an operational earth observation environment.
  • Monitoring & Control software application maintenance and configuration.
  • Ground Stations Monitoring and Control.
  • Baseband operation and configuration.
  • Knowledge of ECSS and CCSDS standards in satellite Telemetry, Telecommanding, ranging & SLE (Space Link Extension)
  • UNIX and Windows based operating system.
  • TCP/IP, SNMP, UDP based communications protocols.
  • C++ and Java programming languages and XML.

Qualifications

Graduate with a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline or the equivalent ground stations experience, with at least five years’ experience in ground stations TT&C operations in support of multiple Geostationary (GEO) and/or Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft.
