SkyMapper has partnered with the SETI Institute to create a decentralized astronomical data network aimed at providing continuous, real-time sky observations to scientists, educators, and citizen astronomers worldwide.

The initiative will allow sky-observing stations and telescopes, including the SETI Institute's LaserSETI, CAMS, and Unistellar programs, to receive and respond to live observation requests. These stations will also contribute their findings to a secure, blockchain-verified global database, ensuring data transparency and integrity.

SkyMapper's database will be open to the SETI Institute, facilitating research, scientific studies, and algorithm development. "A decentralized network like SkyMapper creates a new way to observe the wonders of the universe," said Franck Marchis, SkyMapper co-founder and CEO, and Senior Planetary Astronomer at the SETI Institute. "By joining forces with the SETI Institute, we are combining advanced blockchain technology with world-class scientific expertise to unlock discoveries that will advance human knowledge and benefit teachers, their students and the general public across the globe."

Key aspects of the collaboration include a 24/7 resilient network of telescopes, real-time data sharing, blockchain-backed records for scientific trust, and open participation from the global astronomy community.

"Sharing our research and scientific data and welcoming the participation of citizen scientists from around the world is a key component of the SETI Institute's mission," stated Bill Diamond, President and CEO of the SETI Institute. "Our quest is for all of humanity and this collaboration with SkyMapper gives everyone the chance to participate."

This alliance is expected to enhance observational practices and educational outreach, broadening access to the cosmos for both professionals and enthusiasts.
